Why be a donor??

A donor can help many people Organs and tissue donated by a single person can save and enhance the lives of as many as 100 people. Every year the lives of about 500,000 Americans are saved and enhanced by organ and tissue donation. Often donations are a part of routine medical procedures for example, donated bone is used in simple dental treatments. (Federal law requires patients to be informed of such use.) Of course, donations also have a more dramatic effect. The lives of people suffering from heart and lung disease are saved. The blind can see once again through corneal transplantation. And donated bone can help restore function to crippled or injured limbs, or allow a patient with bone cancer to avoid amputation. Eight vital organs and numerous bones and tissues can be donated. One simple act - letting your family know your wishes about donation - could one day make all the difference for someone desperately awaiting a transplant.

What donation means to donor families??

What donation means to donor families The donation process can be an enormous source of hope and consolation to the donor family. It can provide a sense that something positive, something life-giving can come from the death of a loved one. Many people believe that by signing a donor card, or the back of their drivers license, they will become a donor upon their death. There is another very important step: You must discuss your decision with your family. Federal law requires that, at the time of death, the persons next of kin must be offered the option of organ and tissue donation. Your family will be approached regarding your desire to be an organ/tissue donor. Knowing your wishes in advance will make your families decision much easier.
